The expected direction is another upward shift of roughly 10 to 15 percent on each star band's threshold, which would push the 5-star bar from today's roughly 5.0 to around 5.5 to 5.7. If the revision lands as drafted, today's high-performance 5-star units become 4-star, and only the best inverter designs clear the new bar.
Two other regulatory items are on the medium-term radar: the BIS code for R290 residential ACs (expected late 2026 to early 2027) which will formally permit and govern propane-based residential cooling, and MoEF&CC's next Kigali milestone in 2029 which will tighten R32 manufacturing limits.
Any AC you buy in 2026 will reasonably deliver 10 to 12 years of useful life. Across that period it will see one or two more ISEER revisions, at least one refrigerant policy tightening, and the mainstream arrival of R290.
